ROOTS OF DOMINICAN RELIGION

Statues of saints and goddesses stand with dried herbs, potions and oils for sale in the botanica, a place to purchase medicinal ingredients or religious supplies.

Each dried plant offers up an aroma that fills the small store. A steady stream of customers come in to get help treating illnesses. They ask for traditional remedies recommended by their healers or from Alexandra Reyes, the store manager and daughter of the shop’s owner.
