ROOTS OF DOMINICAN RELIGION


Percussionist Joán D’Leon-Metz and singer-songwriter Irka Mateo perform a ceremonial song called salves.

More and more young Dominican musicians are learning traditional forms of song and ceremony from their country as they search for their roots. Salves are sung for many reasons, but traditionally they were sung supplications to saints, accompanied by drumming during vigils or on processions to decorate an altar.
